In war torn Ukraine the principal dancers of the National Ballet in Ukraine – struggle to keep themselves and their families safe. They perform exquisitely and their dancing expresses their feelings about the Russian invasion.
A concept of the film
En Pointe Soldiers is told through the eyes, experiences and performances of few protagonists, the principal dancers at the Ukrainian National Ballet company.
With the compelling personal story lines of the main stage soldiers to the fore, the film shows the human impact of the war in Ukraine, in divided families and men forced to drop their lives and go to war. There is a powerful tension in the opposition between the gorgeous artform of ballet performed in a historic, Eastern European opera house and the horror of war so present and threatening.
En Pointe Soldiers weaves, within the human stories, some beautifully shot dance sequences with dramatic lighting, as well as scenes in the practice halls and on the stages the dancers more usually perform on.
It's a story of a group of refugee boys from Eritrea who arrived in England to start a new life. They formed a football club entitled One Love - inspired by Bob Marley's song. They play competitive games with other asylum seekers and refugee teams across England. From Newcastle to Brighton. So far they are unbeaten. Will they manage to set up a youthful government on exile in England? Can they stand against their totalitarian regime at home in Eritrea? Will their love spread to other teams of refugees across the UK and beyond? This is their inter-generational journey.
Ben decided to follow his heart. Though a talented musician and teacher, with a beautiful wife and daughters, he didn’t feel his life was a success.
He intended not to follow his mind, which was telling him to stay with his wife and his girls, who he’d not long ago walked to school and read bedtime stories. He had decided to follow his heart, which was telling him that he had a chance to make a success of his life elsewhere.
Three days after his mobile phone went dead, his wife received a letter: a somewhat brutal typed note, explaining that he would no longer be part of their lives. Possessions gone, savings ransacked, social media and email abandoned.
Ben had gone. But where? As his wife fought to find out, in deep shock she had already started to forgive him. Why? Ben had always been a little bit different…
